Postgraduate Certificate of Education (Literacy Studies)

The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (Literacy Studies) is designed for teachers and educators who wish to increase their knowledge of literacy issues particularly as they relate to the early and middle years.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either an approved three-year bachelors degree and an approved fourth year of study, or an approved four-year bachelors degree, or have qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Course outline

The course consists of 24 credit points of study. Students will complete the following two 12-point units:

Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (Literacy Studies) may complete a postgraduate diploma or a masters degree by undertaking a further two or four units respectively.

Course length/workload required

The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (Literacy Studies) requires a minimum of at least one semester of full-time study and no more than two years of part-time study. Each of the units is one semester in length. The expected number of hours per week for a part-time student is 24.

Advanced standing

Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Students who are trained Reading Recovery teachers may seek credit of one unit (12 credit points) toward the award of the postgraduate certificate. Applicants should apply for credit/RPL prior to enrolment. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merit within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer.
