Master of Business Administration/Master of Laws (Commercial Law)

Course code: 3196 + Course abbreviation: MBusAdm/LLM(ComLaw) + Caulfield + On-campus + Day, evening + Five semesters full-time, 10 semesters part-time + Course director: Associate Professor Peter Reed + Total credit points required: 120

This double degree course aims to provide a broad based foundation in business and management while providing existing and aspiring managers with the opportunity of developing specialist knowledge and expertise in business law.

Admission requirements

Applicants need to have completed:

• a degree from a recognised tertiary institution with an average grade of credit or above, and
• a minimum of two years relevant full-time post-degree work experience, preferred four years.

Advanced standing

Candidates should consult the MBA Programs office regarding the advanced standing criteria for the MBA.

Fees

• Local student fees: $18,400 per annum ($2300 per unit)
• International student fees: $22,000 per annum ($2500 per unit)

The fees quoted are provided as a guide only and are subject to final approval by the university late in 2003. For future years of your course, Monash University reserves the right to adjust annual tuition fees to take into account increases in university and course delivery costs. However, Monash University undertakes that any adjustment factor will not exceed 10 per cent per annum.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete 10 core units (60 credit points):

• MBA9001 Managerial and leadership
• MBA9002 The legal environment of business
• MBA9003 Economics for managers
• MBA9004 Accounting for business
• MBA9005 Corporate finance
• MBA9006 Marketing
• MBA9007 Business analysis and planning
• MBA9008 Managing people at work
• MBA9009 Information systems
• MBA5005 Strategic management

(b) Students must complete 10 units (60 credit points) from the Master of Laws (Commercial Law) as follows:
(i) Coursework only
Students enrolling for the degree by coursework alone will be required to complete eight units totalling 48 points from the Master of Laws (Commercial Law) program (at least five of these from the specialist units) plus two further units (12 credit points) from the MBA program.
(ii) Coursework and research
The LLM by coursework and minor thesis may be taken in two ways:

• by completing six coursework units totalling 36 points (at least three of these from the specialist units) and a minor thesis of 15,000 words on an approved topic in the area of commercial law, or
• by completing four coursework units totalling 24 points (at least two of these from the specialist units) and a minor thesis of 30,000 words on an approved topic in the area of commercial law.

Additional unit requirements

Note that within this framework LLM students can take up to two units from other faculties, subject to approval from the course director (LLM), or up to four units approved for the Master of Commercial Law by the Faculty of Law, provided the course director (LLM) is satisfied that the unit does not substantially duplicate a subject previously completed by the candidate.
