Aims

This course is specifically designed to assist occupational health professionals to prevent and manage occupational health problems. This course provides students to develop the skills necessary to evaluate health problems in communities thought to be associated with industrial activities. It caters for the special needs of medical practitioners, nurses, allied health personnel, scientists and OHS managers. Graduates can seek careers in occupational medicine, nursing or management positions within industry, government or independent professional practice.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Australasian Faculty of Occupational Medicine. CME points allocated by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners are applied for each year. The course has also been designed to meet the needs of applicants for membership of the Australian College of Occupational Health Nurses. Accreditation with other professional bodies can be applied upon request.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a medical degree, a bachelors degree with honours or graduate diploma, or a three-year bachelors degree with relevant professional experience in a health-related field. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience. In such instances, the department may require completion of the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health or the Graduate Diploma in Occupational and Environmental Health before enrolling in the masters program.

Special requirements

Access to personal computing facilities is desirable but not essential, however access to the internet is required.

Attendance

Most units have a 20-hour block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne over four days during the semester. The teaching sessions involve interactive tutorials, problem-based learning, case studies and workshops.
