Asian art and design and its influences on Europe 3B (3 points)

Synopsis: This unit is designed to encourage empathy with Asian Art /Design, Religion, and Sociology/Anthropology. The course will also develop students' knowledge of the theory behind cross-cultural aesthetics; This course will introduce students to the study of pre-Twentieth century Asian Art and Design its many impacts on European visual culture. Emphasis will be placed on the Great Traditions of Central, South and East Asia, the rise, diffusion and development of Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic visual culture. European traditions such as Chinoiserie, Japonaiserie and various nineteenth century Orientalisms will be covered, as will the influence of Asian ideas on European Modernism.

Assessment: Short essay (1200 words) 40% + Long essay (1500 words) including class presentation 55% + Reader discussion 5%

Contact Hours: 2 class hours and 4 hours of independent study per week

Prerequisites: two level 2 TAD units
