PHY3051Advanced physiology: Regulation and integration of body systems (6 points)(SCI) Leader: Dr Helena Parkington
Offered: Synopsis: This unit considers the regulation and integration of body systems in daily activity and interruption in homeostasis following injury and disease (eg diabetes mellitus, hypertension). The unit will examine (a) the role of the autonomic nervous system in the maintenance of homeostasis, (b) integrated cardiovascular regulation by nerves and hormones, (c) the interaction of cardiovascular and renal systems in maintaining the stability of volume and the composition of the extracellular fluids and (d) the effect of stress on homeostasis. Assessment: Practical work: 35% + Written theory examination (2 hours): 65% Contact Hours: Four 1-hour lectures and one 6-hour practical per week in weeks 7-12 Prerequisites: Any two of PHY2011, PHY2021 and PHY2032, or both BMS1052 and BMS2031 or BND2011, or permission Prohibitions: PHY3011, PHY3031 |
