Physics for the Environment (4 points)

Synopsis: This unit provides the physical principles and instrument systems for detection and monitoring. Electromagnetic radiation; ray and wave optics; optical systems; lasers, scattering of light, LIDAR. Interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter; absorption; photoelectric detectors. Nuclear radiation; detection; shielding and safety; tracing and other radioisotope methods. Energy sources, solar and nuclear energy, nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear waste. Instrumentation including filters, amplifiers; transducers for temperature, light and sound; doppler velocitometry; infrared imaging.

Assessment: Examination: 56% + Laboratory: 31% + Test/Assignments: 13%

Contact Hours: 24 lecture hours and 24 laboratory hours

Prerequisites: VCE Physics 3/4 or ENG1801
