PHS1011Physics (6 points)(SCI) Leader: Dr David Mills
Offered: Synopsis: Principles of measurement: including simple resistive circuits, time-varying signals, oscilloscope. Mechanics: including inertial frames, Newton's laws, energy, momentum, simple harmonic motion and applications. Introduction to Special Relativity. Basic concepts of thermodynamics. Waves: The behaviour of waves including reflection, polarisation, interference and diffraction with applications to mechanical waves, optics, sound, light and X-rays. Assessment: Examinations (2 x 2 hours): 63% + Laboratory work: 25% + Tests: 12% Contact Hours: Three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour laboratory class per week Prerequisites: Year 12 Physics Corequisites: recommended MTH1020 or MTH1030 Prohibitions: PHS1031 |
