Synopsis: This unit allows students to explore, in both theory and practice, the ways that photography can be used to construct illusion and evoke an imaginary world. The creation of imaginary space, artificiality, the idea of allegory and the theatrical and performative aspects of current practice in photomedia will be considered. Students will examine the ways that photographic illusion has been positioned as an alternative to photographic truth since the earliest days of invention of photography. They will be introduced to a range of two and three-dimensional means of constructing the image and pictorial space.

Assessment: By folio, including set projects, journal and negotiated projects 100%, including a mid-semester assessment worth at least 20% of the mark

Contact Hours: 4 hours lectures, tutorials and/or workshops and 8 independent study hours per week

Prerequisites: 6cps Level 1 Photomedia units or equivalent
