Photography as Matter: Silver, Gelatin, Glass and Paper (6 points)

Synopsis: Within the context of a visual art practice students will become acquainted with a range of alternative photographic image construction approaches and techniques. Students will be introduced to the technical history of photography and the role this history has played in the construction of contemporary photographic practice. The materiality of substances used to produce photographic images will be explored: silver and albumen, gelatin, glass, paper, perspect, aluminium, steel, mirrors and the camera obscura. A range of alternative processes will be introduced including cyanotype, liquid light and gum bichromate printing.

Assessment: Initial folio:20% + Final folio:80%

Contact Hours: 4 hours in class and 8 independent study hours

Prerequisites: 6 points of level 1 Photomedia units

Corequisites: For BVA (photomedia major) only: 6 points in another level 2 Photomedia unit
