Synopsis: Major theoretical foundations underpinning both the traditional model of public sector administration and new public management approaches. Analysis of the difference between the traditional and new approaches within the context of the changing role of government. Students are exposed to the various components of management function both inside and outside the organisation, and how these are changing under new approaches to public management. It looks at the relationships between political action and public sector management, and the critical linkage of accountability. Logical frameworks and concepts are presented to provide a basis for increased personal effectiveness within government.

Assessment: Minor essay (2000 words): 20% + Major essay (3000 words): 40% + Examination: 40%
