Preventive medicine and medical research (4 points)

Synopsis: This unit builds upon previous studies in basic biostatistics, epidemiology and health promotion. Students will gain an understanding of clinical epidemiology, principles of disease prevention, occupational medicine and health economics. A team-based project approach will allow students to develop appropriate methods of data collection and collation, critical appraisal of information, problem-solving and presentation skills. The role of medical research and its application to clinical medicine will also be explored. The challenge of medical research and its potential role in career paths will be highlighted. The integrated end of year OSCE examination will include content from this unit.

Assessment: This subject forms part of November OSCE assessment. Continuous assessment during the program includes a workplace visit. Attendance and report required and this is pass grade only.
