HYM4870Theories and Histories of Society (12 points)(ARTS) Leader: Graeme Davison and Mark Peel
Offered: Synopsis: This unit examines theoretical approaches and questions in what is broadly termed 'social history', with a particular emphasis on urban history, histories of social investigation, histories of welfare, justice and governance, and histories of institutions such as prisons, schools, and hospitals. Students will examine selected writers including Marx, Weber, Bloch, Braudel, Thompson, Foucault, Fraser, De Certeau, Wilson , and a range of feminist and ethnographic historians. Assessment: Historiographical essay (2000 words):25% + Research essay (5000 words): 50% + Take-home examination (2000 words): 25% Contact Hours: One 2-hour seminar per week |
