HSY4860Theories and Histories of Society (12 points)(ARTS) Leader: Graeme Davison and Mark Peel
Offered: Synopsis: This unit examines theoretical approaches and questions in what is broadly termed 'social history,' with a particular emphasis on urban history, histories of social investigation, histories of welfare, justice and governance, and histories of institutions such as prisons, schools and hospitals. Students will examine selected writers including Marx, Weber, Bloch, Braudel, Thompson, Foucault, Fraser, De Certeau, Wilson, and a rang of feminist and ethnographic historians. Assessment: Historigraphical essay (2000 words): 25% + Rsearch Essay (5000 words): 50% + Take-home examination (2000 words): 25% Contact Hours: One two-hour seminar per week |
