Rural Change and Sustainability (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit examines the causes and consequences of contemporary social changes taking place in rural regions, with particular reference to Australia. Through the application of sociological concepts and theories, it examines the processes, institutions, policies and political debates that define what it means to be rural and shape the social organisation of rural societies. The unit will be of particular relevance to students who intend to live or work in non-metropolitan settings. Key modules include: Locating 'the Rural'; Agricultural Restructuring; Regional Decline and Renewal; and, Prospects for Rural Sustainability.

Assessment: Short Essay (1000 words): 25% + Tutorial Presentation (30 minutes) and Paper (1000 words): 35% (on-campus students only) + Long Essay (1500 words): 35% (off-campus students only) + Examination (2 hours): 40%

Contact Hours: 2 hours per week (1-hour lecture, 1-hour tutorial)

Prerequisites: GSC1201 and GSC1202 or equivalents
