EDF5103Primary Mathematics Education (6 points)(EDU) Leader: Dr B Clarke & Dr R Smith
Offered: Synopsis: This unit develops knowledge, skills and attitudes about teaching and learning in primary school mathematics. Topics will include children's mathematical development in early number concepts, written and mental computation, estimation, fractions and decimals, measurement, space, and chance and data, providing opportunity for students to develop their personal confidence and competence in mathematics. Focus will be given to the teaching of problem solving and the use of information technology in the context of mathematics (e.g. appropriate software, video, calculator use). Students will explore a range of classroom teaching models and assessment strategies. Assessment: A written report on observational mathematical tasks undertaken by children (1200 words): 30%; Assignment 2: Contexts in the teaching of mathematics 30% (1200 words); Class test: 40% (2 hrs - equivalent 1600 words) + the unit has an 80% attendance requirement.
