Synopsis: An introduction to microprocessor fundamentals and low level programming. Topics: coordination and control of CPU internals through microprogrammed control schemes. A representative microprocessor is studied in some detail: architecture, instruction set, mnemonic representation and assembly language programming. Software: assemblers, simulators, code conversions, maths routines, and I/O programming. Hardware: CPU bus signals, I/O methods, address decoding, and simple I/O interface design.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 55% + Practical work: 30% + Tests, tutorial work and assignments: 15%

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures, one 1-hour tutorial and one 2-hour practical class per week

Prerequisites: one of DGS1111, CSE1101, CSE1308 or CSE2306

Prohibitions: CFR1140, CFR1201, CFR1202, COT1140, CSE1307, DGS1210
