Synopsis: Technical and implementation details of major protocols in the TCP/IP protocols suite, a prerequisite for design and implementation of networking applications. Structure of TCP/IP and the network interface layer. Design principles and implementation aspects of protocols in the IP and TCP layers. Major application protocols in the TCP/IP protocols suite (eg. DNS, DHCP,Telnet, TFTP, FTP, SMTP, NNTP).Compare and contrast TCP/IP with other major networking protocols (IBM SNA and Novell IPX).

Assessment: Assignments: 40%, Exam: 60%.

Prerequisites: CPE1007 or CPE2002, plus a further 12 points of Network Computing units.

Prohibitions: CSE3821.
