Synopsis: This subject aims to provide students with an understanding of how data is communicated between entities and the issues involved in running network applications. Topics to be covered include OSI reference model layers, protocols and services; data transmission basics; interface standards; topologies; data link protocols; routing; LAN; WAN; TCP/IP suite; network management; web access; network applications.

Assessment: Practical Work: 40%; Examination (3 hours):60% (exam 2 hours, unit test 1 hour)

Contact Hours: 4 hours per week

Prerequisites: CPE1002, CPE1005
