Chinese Readings in a Discipline Area, Part 2 (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit will extend on the work completed in CHI2430 by introducing students to further aspects of the Chinese language as it is used in academic writing within the Chinese humanities. It will cover a range of key topics in the disciplines of literature, politics, history and cultural studies, as these are discussed and written about in the Chinese language. It will also examine and compare Chinese and Western styles of academic writing, research methods and goals. Questions of translation, both linguistic and cultural, will be central to this subject.

Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 40% + Class translation project (equivalent 2000 words): 40% + Two oral presentations (equivalent to 1500 words): 20%

Contact Hours: 4 hours (4 x seminars) per week

Prerequisites: CHI2430 or CHI2210 or permission

Prohibitions: CHI2440, CHI3440
