Synopsis: This unit will extend on the work completed in CHI2430 by introducing students to further aspects of the Chinese language as it is used in academic writing within the Chinese humanities. It will cover a range of key topics in the disciplines of literature, politics, history and cultural studies, as these are discussed and written about in the Chinese language. It will also examine and compare Chinese and Western styles of academic writing, research methods and goals. Questions of translation, both linguistic and cultural, will be central to this unit.

Assessment: Essay (2,500 words): 50% + Class translation project (750 words): 25% + Seminar presentation (750 words): 15% + Literature review: 10%

Contact Hours: Three hours (3 x seminars) per week

Prerequisites: CHI3430 or CHI2210 or permission
