Chinese Business Communication, Part 1 (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit will develop skills and background knowledge that are useful for doing business in China or working in companies that have business dealings with China. Students will study and practice both general and specialist verbal communication via a series of contextualized dialogues. In addition, students will be required to read and discuss a range of background material in Chinese that will cover legal, cultural and social issues relevant to doing business in China, as well as specific business skills such as negotiation techniques and writing basic business correspondence.

Assessment: Project (1500 words): 15% + Class presentation: 5% + Participation in class discussions: 5% + Mid-semester written test (1 hour): 15% + Oral exam: 25% + End of semester exam (2 hours): 35%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (3 x seminars) per week

Prerequisites: CHI2320 or equivalent

Prohibitions: CHI2450, CHI4459, CHI1470, CHI2470, CHI3470, CHI4470
