Synopsis: Part one: Mandarin. Introduction of phonetic system and phonology; the pinyin romanisation and the simplified character. Part two: Refer to Advanced Chinese, part 1 CHI1410/2410/3410.

Assessment: Weekly oral/aural exercises: 40% + Written examination: 30% + Oral examination: 30%

Contact Hours: 4 hours (2 x 2 hour seminars) per week

Prerequisites: Basic literacy in Chinese
