Synopsis: This unit introduces students to the principles and practices of Research, Scientific Method and Reasoning, problem solving and statistical confidence estimation. It develops an understanding of the design of experiments, especially the rigorous non-parametric approach. It introduces the basic skills of writing, communicating and referencing as well as an introduction to research in neural networks and simulation. Students are also acquainted with the statistics of testing small samples and quality assurance. Applications of personal computer software in statistical data handling via SPSS or Systat is the only out-of-class test.

Assessment: Class tests: 70% + Assignment: 30%

Contact Hours: One 2-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial per week

Prerequisites: Entry to the Master of Business Systems or equivalent Masters program.
