Advanced standing

Suitably qualified ambulance and MICA paramedics currently employed* by Victorian or interstate ambulance services or allied organisations will receive advanced standing into degree conversion. Suitably qualified and experienced Australian armed forces personnel will be considered for entry into degree conversion on a case-by-case basis. Students with additional prior learning, qualifications and experience may apply to the faculty for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and credit transfer.

Fee structure

The diploma and advanced diploma are industry-funded programs conducted on contract to the State Government through the Department of Human Services (DHS).

The degree conversion is a HECS-funded program.

Police checks

Organisations that host clinical placements may require students to have obtained a police check regarding their suitability to undertake such placements. All enrolled and prospective students are advised that they may be required to obtain and pay for a police check prior to undertaking the clinical placements in their course.

Course outline and structure

This degree is a 144-credit-point degree and equivalent to three years of full-time study, usually taken over five or six years of part-time study with concurrent work experience. The degree is structured with an exit point at diploma level. Students could then complete their degree studies directly by completing the degree conversion requirements outlined below or through the advanced diploma route.

To complete the degree conversion, ambulance paramedics require the successful completion of units totalling 48 credit points, Ambulance `ALS' paramedics require the successful completion of units totalling 36 credit points and MICA paramedics require the successful completion of units totaling 24 credit points, all with concurrent work experience. Course requirements for interstate paramedics and Australian armed forces personnel will be determined on application.

The units required include four compulsory core units as follows:

Year one
Year two

These units will be supplemented by a minor stream of electives chosen from outside the faculty.
