Progression to Bachelor of Commerce (Honours)

• First and second year
• Third year

Students whose academic performance is considered of sufficient standard in any of the Bachelor of Commerce degrees (generic or specialised) may complete a fourth year in one of the specialisations of accounting and finance, economics, economic history, econometrics and business statistics, or management, and be awarded the Bachelor of Commerce degree with honours. It is also possible to undertake a joint fourth-year honours course in either the departments of Accounting and Finance and Econometrics and Business Statistics (Clayton), or the departments of Economics and Econometrics and Business Statistics (Clayton). Students wishing to take honours in taxation may apply to enrol in the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in taxation at Caulfield.

It should be noted that the honours year is usually required to be undertaken on a full-time basis, but the head of the department may give permission for the course to be completed on a part-time basis in certain circumstances. Students wishing to attempt an honours degree should normally have gained at least 65 per cent in the units taught by the department in which they intend to take honours. Students who do not obtain 65 per cent in the first year of the course but who obtain an average of 65 per cent in second year may also be considered for honours candidature.

First and second year

The selection of units in first and second year is the same as for the pass degree.

Third year

In their third year of full-time study, students will be required to select a third-year honours specialisation. Students who wish to enrol in one of the honours courses should apply to the head of the department concerned at the time of re-enrolment. Some departments require students to enrol in an additional, unweighted honours unit.

• Accounting and Finance: No special third-year honours unit. Students should take at least four third-year accounting and finance units.
• Econometrics and Business Statistics: Students should take at least three third-year econometrics units plus the third-year honours unit ETC3470 (Econometrics (pre-honours)). Students should normally include ETC3400 and ETC3410. The other appropriate third-year units are ETC3450, ETC3460, ETC3480 and ETC3500.
• Economic history: Students must take at least three third-year economic history units plus the third-year honours unit ECC3850 (Economic history [honours]) or do additional work over the vacation period prior to entering the fourth-year honours course.
• Economics: Students must take at least four third-year economics units, including ECC3855 (Topics in economics), plus the third-year honours unit ECC3850 (Economics [pre-honours]).
• Management: Students must take at least three third-year management units. It is recommended that they take MGC3650 (Management research methods pre-honours). Students who have not completed MGC3600 in third year will be required to do additional work over the vacation period prior to entering the fourth-year honours course.

For specific information on the structure and requirements of the honours specialisations available in the departments of Accounting and Finance, Economics, Econometrics and Business Statistics, and Management, see the section `Honours degrees' at the end of this chapter. In general, departments require students to have achieved an average grade of 65 per cent or above in the third-year program in order to proceed to the honours degree.
