The borders between the arts and sciences are blurring as the dramatic changes to society and the planet that have resulted from the industrial and information revolutions have made the implications of science more obvious. These new inter-faculty and interdisciplinary first-year units explore the creation of scientific knowledge, the nature of science and its meaning for society and for the rest of the natural world, both locally and globally. They present an interdisciplinary perspective, combining scientific approaches with those of the humanities and social sciences. Arts students can take the following units without requesting special permission from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
* students can complete BME1111 and BME1112 as one of their first- year arts sequences. The School of Geography and Environmental Science and the School of Historical Studies will accept a first-year sequence in BME units as part of a minor or major sequence in geography or history.
Psychology is concerned with a wide range of phenomena including remembering and forgetting, thinking, problem-solving, learning, the acquisition of skills, language, seeing and hearing, decision-making, verbal and non-verbal communication, social interaction and emotions. It is also concerned with the practical and ethical applications of psychological research to the profession. The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences offers units which can be counted towards the arts component of most undergraduate courses. Students can choose to study either the Australian Psychological Society (APS)- accredited stream, with the option of proceeding to honours or postgraduate studies in the discipline, or a standard major (48 points).
Students wishing to undertake the APS-accredited major sequence in psychology must complete 10 six-point units (nine core units and one elective unit) from the list below. Students wishing to complete the standard major are free to choose from the list below, paying attention to pre and corequisites, once they have completed the two core first-year-level units. The core units are available by on-campus, flexible delivery and off- campus learning mode (please note that psychology units are offered only by off-campus learning on the Gippsland campus from 2003).
Students may take an elective unit at second year and up to four elective units at third year, ie it may be possible for students to study 100 per cent psychology units in third-year depending on other Arts faculty course requirements. Some third-year electives may be undertaken at second year, providing prerequisites and corequisites are met.
