This two-year, part-time course offered by the School of Nursing is designed for registered nurses who wish to pursue a career in mental health nursing. In this time of change in the provision of mental health services, there is an acute need for educational programs that will equip professional nurses with the specialist skills required by mental health care agencies at local, national and international levels. The course is offered by off-campus learning and makes extensive use of computer technology to facilitate communication between students, teaching staff, clinical experts and consumers.
Applicants would normally have a degree in nursing or a related discipline; registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria (Division 1, 3 or 4 or eligible for registration); and at least one year of nursing experience. Special entry may be available.
The Graduate Diploma of Nursing (Mental Health) consists of seven units, which will normally be completed over a period of two years. Successful completion of the course requires the study of three core units and four elective units.
The choice of units undertaken in year two varies according to students' professional interests and career directions. Units are normally chosen from three broad themes:
