Postgraduate Diploma of Education (TESOL - International)


General information

The Postgraduate Diploma of Education (TESOL - International) is designed to accommodate both teachers and novices and aims to develop these candidates' understanding of the theory and practice of teaching English as a foreign or second international language in a range of contexts (elementary, secondary, tertiary and workplace).

This course would best suit the needs of teachers or prospective teachers from overseas who are four-year qualified (approved by the faculty) and who do not wish to teach in Australia.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either an approved three-year bachelors degree and an approved fourth year of study, or an approved four-year bachelors degree, or have qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Note that for this qualification to be recognised by employment bodies in Australia, there is an additional requirement for applicants to have completed teacher training recognised in Australia. Applicants will need to also complete the following unit as a general elective unit during the course: EDF6238 (Advanced practicum in language teaching).
The practicum option is only available to students who enter the course with an IELTS or equivalent of 6.5 or better.
Applicants must also demonstrate their English proficiency.

Education in full English medium in an English-speaking country or one of the following:

TOEFL - 550 with TWE of 4
Computer-based TOEFL - 213

IELTS - 6.5 global (speaking and writing no lower than 6)
TOEFL - 577 with TWE of 4.5

Course outline

For the award of Postgraduate Diploma of Education (TESOL - International), a candidate must successfully complete four 12-point units from those listed below:

Program 1 - entry with an IELTS of 6 or its equivalent

Program 2 - entry with an IELTS of 6.5 or its equivalent

Length of course/workload required

This course requires a minimum of at least one semester of full-time study and no more than two years of part-time study. Each unit will require attendance at a weekly seminar of three hours per week, together with substantial reading and associated assignment work. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48.
