The masters qualifying programs are designed for students who have a bachelors degree and wish to proceed to a one-year masters program or to PhD candidature. Two kinds of programs are offered: masters qualifying with a research component and masters qualifying by coursework. Both programs are undertaken in one year of full-time or two years of part-time study. All students undertake units to the value of 48 points at level four.
Students should note that although masters qualifying programs do not lead
to a degree, masters qualifying by coursework programs are usually identical in
content to a graduate/postgraduate diploma program in the same discipline,
while the masters qualifying with a research component programs are similar to
honours degree programs and are intended for students wishing to proceed to
research degrees. See individual discipline entries for details of programs
offered. For further information on research disciplines, see the `Research
programs' entry.
The masters qualifying programs are, as the name indicates, intended for
students who wish to proceed to further studies at masters (or PhD) level. They
are in themselves not a formal qualification and students can therefore not
graduate. However, students who are unable to proceed to further studies may
apply to graduate with a graduate (or postgraduate) diploma.
Students undertaking a masters qualifying program (MQual), either with a
research component or by coursework, must obtain at least a credit average (60
C) in order to have satisfactorily completed the program. A weighted average
will be used in the calculation, ie the mark for each unit will be considered
relative to its points. Marks for units for which advanced standing (credit)
has been granted will not be taken into consideration in the calculation.
In some programs, a minimum grade of credit (60 C) may be required for some or
all of the core units. Refer to the individual programs listed under each
discipline.
The minimum entry requirement for the masters qualifying programs is a credit average in the third part of the major sequence or in the final year of a bachelors degree. Some programs may require students to have achieved distinction average grades - refer to the entry requirements for individual programs. Students intending to apply should contact the relevant school.
