Masters by coursework

1.5-year (72-point) programs

Many disciplines offer programs that enable candidates with a bachelors degree to proceed to a masters in 18 months of full-time study or three years of part-time study. Students normally complete 72 points of coursework, which may include a 12 or 24-point research project.

Students may normally exit from these programs with a graduate diploma after successful completion of 48 points, or with a Graduate Certificate of Arts after successful completion of 24 points. To graduate, students are required to gain a grade of credit (60) or above in core units and a credit average overall.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement is normally a bachelors degree with a credit average in the final year. Those with an honours degree or a graduate diploma in a relevant area are normally eligible to apply for an advanced entry point (see `Advanced standing').

One-year (48-point) programs

These coursework programs, though shorter in length, require four years of previous study in a relevant discipline for entry. Students complete 48 points of coursework units at fifth-year level. This is normally achieved in one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. In some cases, a research project of 12 or more points may be included.

For students undertaking these programs, the minimum passing grade is a credit (60). To qualify for the degree, students must have achieved a credit or better in all units. Students enrolled in the Master of Environmental Science degree must obtain a credit in all core and foundation units and a credit average over all.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement is a four-year honours degree with a grade of H2B or above or a masters qualifying with grades of credit average or above or a graduate/postgraduate diploma with grades of credit average in a relevant discipline. Some sections and centres may require higher grades - refer to the individual program for details.
