Aims

The Master of Education (Music Education) is designed to provide teachers with an understanding of a range of issues and an understanding of research as it relates to music education.

Course outline

Students are required to successfully complete 72 credit points of study comprising:

Candidates who wish to proceed to doctoral-level studies (PhD or EdD) must meet the entrance requirements by having completed research at honours or masters level. To be eligible for doctoral-level studies, MEd candidates must take the research project option. They must achieve a grade of distinction or better for the project and an average of distinction or better in their units.

Research core

Students will complete one 12-point unit chosen from:

Program elective unit

Students are to choose at least one program elective unit selected from the designated list of MEd program electives that are timetabled for 2003.

Specialist elective units

At least two units chosen from:

General elective units

Students are to choose up to any two postgraduate units relevant to their course from those timetabled for 2003 after approval from the course coordinator.

Research project

The research core unit is a corequisite for the research project. It may be taken concurrently with the research project or completed prior to the commencement of the research project.

Assessment

All units are assessed by a combination of tasks, which may include examinations, assignments and other set tasks.

Length of course/workload required

The Master of Education (Music Education) requires a minimum of at least 18 months (three semesters) of full-time study and no more than four years of part-time study. Each of the units is of one semester in length. The expected number of hours per week for a part-time student is 24.

Advanced standing for previous study

Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Applicants should apply for credit/RPL prior to enrolment. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merit within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer.
