Photography as evidence: constructing the documentary image 3

Synopsis: Within the context of a visual art practice students will be introduced to a range of documentary images, constructions, approaches and techniques. They will be involved in the analysis of contemporary and historical documentary images and will move towards developing a personal conceptual framework. To develop an awareness of historical precedent, traditions of photographic documentary image making will be examined, and notions of the photographic process as impartial and objective will be tested. The role of photography as a record-making process and a constructor of 'evidence' will be explored, and biography, autobiography, history and truth will be considered. Through participating in a program of lectures, tutorials and workshops students will develop their conceptual facility whilst extending skills and knowledge acquired in Level 2 Photomedia subjects, including 35mm camera technique and black and white processing and printing.
