Photography as evidence:constructing the documentary image

Synopsis: Within the context of a visual art practice students will be introduced to a range of documentary images, constructions, approaches and techniques. They will be involved in the analysis of contemporary and historical documentary images and will move towards developing a personal conceptual framework. To develop an awareness of historical precedent, traditions of photographic documentary image making will be examined, and notions of the photographic process as impartial and objective will be tested. The role of photography as a record-making process and a constructor of 'evidence' will be explored, and biography, autobiography, history and truth will be considered.

Assessment: Initial folio:20% + Final folio:80%
