Advanced counselling

(EDU)

12 Credit Points + 3 hours each week + Second semester + Clayton (on or off-campus mode) + Note: Off-campus students must attend a one-week Residential School + Prerequisites: Successful completion of EDF6501 (or exemption for students with proven knowledge and competencies in the field of counselling)

Synopsis: This unit provides intensive instruction and practice in four therapeutic approaches employed by counselling psychologists. Cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychodynamic/existential therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and constructivist approaches are covered. Attention is paid to the application of these therapeutic approaches to a range of problem areas, including depression, anxiety, couples distress, family conflict, and eating disorders. Issues of engagement and resistance are also addressed. Extensive class notes and reading materials are provided.

Assessment: One written case study of 3000 words (30%), one practical exam (40%), and one essay of 4000 words (30%).
