The degree of Bachelor of Science is a course of three-years full-time duration
(or equivalent part-time). It aims to provide a broad, general science
education, equipping graduates for employment in both the public and corporate
sectors where the emphasis is on generic skills, which include numeracy, data
analysis and presentation skills, and the capacity to work in teams. Graduates
will also have specialist training in one or more science disciplines, with the
potential for honours and postgraduate study, leading to employment
opportunities in any of the traditional careers for scientists. The maximum
time for completion is 10 years.
Students are required to complete at least one major sequence in a science field of study and at least one minor sequence in a science field of study. See the section on sequences under 'Essential information for students enrolling in undergraduate science degrees' for further details.
Students
are required to take two core units: SCI2010 (How science works) at level two*
and one of the following: SCI1020 (The design of science), STA1010 (Statistical
methods for science), MTH1030 (Techniques for modelling) or MAT1085
(Mathematics 1B) at level one.
In addition, students will also be required to take at least one level-one unit
from each of the three groups (PLE):
A
maximum of 60 points of units may be taken at level one (including core and PLE
units). With 12 points of compulsory core units and at least 72 points of major
and minor study, a student may take up to 60 points in elective units.
Units must be taken from the science units contained in this handbook as
follows:
Students may study up to 48
points from units offered by another faculty subject to meeting any entry
requirements of that faculty.
OR SCI1010 AT LEVEL ONE, IF TAKEN IN 1999 OR 2000.
Students must include units to the value of at least 144 points, including:
