Bachelor of Design; Bachelor of Design (Honours)

General information

Course codes: 2128; 2959 + Caulfield campus + Course abbreviations: BDes; BDes(Hons) + Full-time: three years, plus one year for honours + Course coordinator: Jenny Allen
The Bachelor of Design provides a multidisciplinary design education. Its focus is on the fundamental principles that underlie all designer activities. Some graduates are likely to work in a multidisciplinary design role, eg retail design; others may choose to work in an interdisciplinary role such as in design computing or design management. The Bachelor of Design (Honours) is available for students who want to pursue design research.
The design studio units are supported by electives selected from interior architecture, industrial design, visual communications and the specialisations within these disciplines such as photomedia, multimedia, typography, illustration, etc.
The course is focused on producing graduates who have the capability to work across conventional design and industry boundaries and who are capable of responding flexibly and creatively to the changing commercial and cultural context of design activity.

Structure of the course

The pass degree

This three-year, full-time course is structured to give the following areas of study.

Design studios (63 credit points)

This is the major study of the course. There are studios at each year stage.

Design electives (36 credit points)

Students take at minimum 18 credit points of electives selected from the range of units offered in interior architecture, industrial design, visual communications, multimedia design and the specialisation within these disciplines. The remaining 18 credit points of design electives will be determined in consultation with the course coordinator.

Theory of art and design (24 credit points)

Students study the theory, context and cultural aspects of art and design.

Drawing and visual structures (6 credit points)

Students take one compulsory six-point unit in the first year. These studies are concerned with the development of perception, communication and visual concepts primarily using drawing media. It is anticipated that many students will take further studies in the drawing studio. This will be determined by the course coordinator in consultation with the student.

Professional practice (9 credit points)

The core unit is provided from the faculty's common program.

Digital imaging (6 credit points)

Students take the faculty's common unit 'Digital imaging 1' and also 'Digital imaging 2'. All students may take further computing and digital imaging electives selected on the basis of their design focus.

Length of course/workload required

Pass

Three years of full-time study. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48 (contact and non-contact). An 80 per cent attendance record for studios, lectures, seminars etc is required before a student may present for assessment in any unit. Exceptions will be subject to the approval of the course coordinator.

Honours

One additional year of full-time study, or two years part-time. Workload as for the pass degree.

Admission requirements

Pass

The course will be offered through the VTAC system. Entry is on the basis of portfolio, interview and ENTER. Completion of VCE units 3 and 4 English (any) with a study score of at least 25. Applications will also be considered on the basis of other qualifications assessed as equivalent to the VCE.

Honours

Completion of the Bachelor of Design pass degree at an average level of credit or higher. Students may also be required to submit a portfolio of studio work for selection into the honours program.

Advanced standing (credit provision)

Credit will be granted for equivalent studies completed elsewhere at approved institutions. Advanced standing in the course for students who have completed part of similar courses at Australian or international universities will be considered up to a maximum of two years and in accordance with other regulations of Monash University. Each application for credit or advanced standing will be considered on its own merits.

Fee structure

For students with Australian residency, this course falls within the lowest band of HECS liability. The fee for international students will be set by the vice-chancellor from time to time (currently $14,500 per annum).
