Master of Applied Japanese Linguistics*


General information

The course seeks to further students' understanding of second and foreign language acquisition, language teaching, language contact and intercultural communication with particular reference to Japanese. It also aims to develop students' skills in critical reading and ability to design a research project.
The duration of the course is normally three semesters full-time or six semesters part-time, and students can enter the program in semester one or two. Students can exit the course after one semester (or part-time equivalent) with a Graduate Certificate of Arts or, after one-year (or part-time equivalent), with a Graduate Diploma of Japanese Applied Linguistics. Students require credit results in the core units and an overall credit average to graduate from the Masters in Applied Japanese Linguistics.
Students undertake units to the value of 24 points at level four, another 24 points at level four or five, and 24 points at level five. Two core units to the value of 12 points each must be included.

Entry requirements

A bachelors degree with a credit average in the final year, and including a minimum of high intermediate (Level C at Monash) in Japanese.

English language requirements

As for English proficiency requirements for the Faculty of Arts:
(a) IELTS -- an overall band score of not less than 6.5 on the IELTS. In addition, a score of at least 6.0 is required in each module and applicants must undertake the appropriate module (A,B or C) in regard to reading and writing; or
(b) TOEFL -- an overall score of 580, with a 5 in the TWE test. Scores must be available for both the TOEFL and TWE. A minimum score of at least 237 is needed on the computerized TOEFL testing, plus a core of 5 or more for the TWE; or
(c) Successful completion of a course of tertiary studies of at least two years duration requiring formal assessment of written work in an English-speaking country.
Note that students from countries assessed by the government as categories 3 and 4 must take the IELTS test and not the TOEFL. Japanese students may sit for either test.

Course structure

All students complete the two core units, usually in their first year, made up of JAL4610/JAL5610 (Research methodology in applied linguistics) and JAL4530/JAL5530 (Teaching Asian languages). In addition, students complete four electives, to the value of 48 points. At least one core and one elective or two elective units will be available each semester. The electives will usually be offered on a rotating basis. Students who obtained a distinction average in the units already completed and who have also undertaken JAL4610/JAL5610 (Research methodology in applied linguistics) may seek approval from the course coordinator to undertake a research project for 12 points (usually AST4680/AST5680 Research project A) as one of the electives.

Advanced standing

Prior learning may be recognised by giving advanced standing in the following ways:

advanced standing to a maximum of 36 points at level four.

All decisions on the extent of advanced standing will be at the discretion of the school's postgraduate coordinator.
