This course is specifically designed for professionals in the workplace who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in preventive occupational health practice. The diploma allows health professionals to gain sound knowledge of attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary to provide preventive health services to reduce the impact of disease and injury resulting from factors in the workplace and their extension into the community. Graduates can seek careers in occupational health, nursing or management positions within industry, government or independent professional practice. The graduate diploma articulates with the Master of Occupational and Environmental Health or the Master of Public Health.
The Australasian Faculty of Occupational Medicine has recognised the graduate diploma as meeting the coursework requirements for trainees. CME points allocated by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners are applied for each year. The course has also been designed to meet the needs of applicants for membership of the Australian College of Occupational Health Nurses. Accreditation with other professional bodies can be applied upon request.
Applicants must have a medical degree, a bachelors degree with honours or graduate diploma, or a three-year bachelors degree with relevant professional experience in a health-related field. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience. In such instances, the department may require completion of the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health before enrolling in the graduate diploma.
Access to personal computing facilities is desirable but not essential, however access to the internet is required.
Most
units have a 20-hour block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne over four days
during one week of the semester. The teaching sessions involve interactive
tutorials, problem-based learning, case studies and workshops. Experiential
learning through worksite visits and student presentations is provided, and
also the opportunity to increase understanding and application of the course
material through discussion with unit experts and experienced practitioners.
Students may undertake the units MPH1040 (Introductory epidemiology) and
MPH1041 (Introductory biostatistics), which are only offered on-campus. These
units are recommended for students wishing to undertake the masters program.
The Graduate Diploma in Occupational and Environmental Health comprises 48 credit points. It consists of six core and two elective units taken over either a 12-month period of two full-time semesters, or a 24-month period of four part-time semesters.
Assessment for the course is a combination of assignment work, student presentation and examination.
Advanced standing may be granted for the core units where the student supplies documentary evidence of successfully completing a similar unit at a similar level elsewhere, within the last seven years. Any candidate may, with the approval of the course coordinator and the faculty, be granted credit for up to 50 per cent of their course. All advanced standing applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
