Graduate Certificate in Public Policy and Management


Course code: 1505 + City campus + Fee-paying course: course fee $5200; unit fee $1300 (2001 fee) + Attendance not required

Aims

The Graduate Certificate in Public Policy and Management is a four-unit course designed to help people understand conceptual frameworks of public policy and management in the public sector. The course will analyse current major challenges in public policy and public management and the range of solutions being canvassed to address these by modern government. The course will provide students with the opportunity to apply the skills gained from the program to work-related situations.

Entry requirements

Applicants require a pass degree from a recognised tertiary institution or an equivalent qualification as determined by the faculty board.
Applicants should note that there are two intakes per year to this course: first semester (March) and second semester (July).

Special requirements

It is strongly recommended that students have access to a personal computer and a modem to facilitate email communication with their lecturer, other participants, and electronic access to library services.

Course structure

The course of study is one year part-time. Students should enrol in two units each semester. To complete the course requirements, students must complete four units:
(a) Two core units

Two electives chosen from the following units, other departments of the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other faculties of Monash University, subject to the approval of the course director:

Assessment

Assessment will be a combination of assignments and final examination for each unit. Generally, a pass is required in the final examination to pass the unit.

Articulation

Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Public Policy and Management will allow direct entry into the Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management or the Master of Public Policy and Management.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Students may apply for credit exemption for a maximum of four units considered to be equivalent to units in the Graduate Certificate in Public Policy and Management and which would fall within the time limits prescribed. Students may also be required to substitute units where they have studied them previously at the undergraduate level.
