Biochemistry
and molecular biology is a discipline that is central to all the life sciences
and biomedical sciences. It seeks to describe the molecular basis of living
systems from viruses to humans.
Biochemistry and molecular biology are first offered as subjects at the
second-year level. Many students will wish to make biochemistry and molecular
biology a major field of study in the second and third years of their course.
For these students, the second-year subject combinations BCH2011 (The molecules
of life) and BCH2022 (Energy metabolism of cells and tissues), together with
MOL2011 (Molecular biology: genes and their expression) and MOL2022 (Molecular
biology: gene technology and its application) are needed, or are highly
recommended, for entry into third-year subjects. Third-year students will be
able to choose from five six-point subjects, two offered in semester one,
BCH3011 (Proteins, structural biology and disease) and BCH3031 (Advanced
molecular biology), and three offered in semester two, BCH3022 (Cell
organelles), BCH3042 (Cell signalling) and BCH3062 (Molecular bioinformatics).
The fourth-year subject BCH4000 (Biochemistry and molecular biology),
incorporating research training as well as minor coursework, leads to the
degree of Bachelor of Science with honours in biochemstry and molecular biology.
* MOL2011 AND MOL2022 ARE OFFERED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DEPARTMENTS OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AND MICROBIOLOGY
