BCH2011The molecules of life(SCI)
Dr Rob Pike 6 points + Three 1-hour lectures and 3-hour practical/tutorial/self-directed learning exercise per week + First semester + Clayton + Highly recommended: CHM1011/CHM1022 or BIO1011/BIO1022 with VCE Chemistry or CHM1031/CHM1042 + Prohibition: BTH2746 Synopsis: Biomolecular structure and the relationship with molecular function. Topics include the structure of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids; the importance of enzymes and their interactions with substrates and inhibitors; the molecular organisation of membranes and the role of lipids and carbohydrates. The importance of membranes in cellular metabolism. The application of bioinformatics to proteins. Techniques used to study the structure and function of biomolecules. Assessment: Mid-semester test (45 min): 10% + Examination (3 hours): 60% + Evaluation of practicals/ assignments/ self-directed learning exercises: 30% |
