The Bachelor of Economics degree provides for a compulsory study of economics at first and second-year level, and a compulsory study of business statistics at first year. The degree requires students to undertake a three-year specialisation in one of the areas of economics, econometrics or economic history. A second three-year major sequence may be taken in these disciplines, or in accounting and finance, business law and taxation, or management, or a discipline from another faculty. Such disciplines include languages, mathematics, computing, business systems, the social sciences, sciences and humanities.

Course structure

All first, second and third-year subjects offered by the faculty of Business and Economics have a value of six points. Full-time students are expected to progress at the rate of eight subjects or 48 points per year. First-year students may not normally take a second-year subject until at least four first-year subjects have been successfully completed. It should be noted that subjects in the later years of the course have prerequisites and corequisites. In addition, students are normally expected to take subjects in a yearly sequence even if there are no prerequisite subjects specified.
Students are required to complete the following compulsory subjects:

• ECC1000 and ECC1100/ECC2100 (Economics)
• ETC1000 and ETC1010/ETC2010 (Business and economic statistics)
• AFC1021/AFC1022 (Accounting)
• MGC1010 (Management)
• MKC1200/MKC2200 (Marketing)
• BTC1110/BTC2110 (Business law)
• ECC2000 Intermediate microeconomics and ECC2010 Intermediate macroeconomics

Students wishing to take first-year subjects other than those on the above list are able to undertake the second-year versions of the appropriate number of compulsory subjects. This allows students to complete substantial work in related fields.
Students must also complete two additional second-year level and three third-year level subjects drawn from one of the departments of Economics (Clayton) or Econometrics and Business Statistics (Clayton).
The following are also requirements of the course:

• satisfactory completion of 24 subjects, or subjects to the value of a total of 144 points, over three full-time years or a maximum of 10 years of study
• a maximum of 10 first-year-level subjects (60 points)
• a minimum of six third-year-level subjects (36 points) of which at least four must be from those offered in the faculty at the campus delivering this program
• at least two non-compulsory subjects (12 points) must be from disciplines other than economics or econometrics and business statistics
• an option to include subjects to a maximum value of 48 points from disciplines outside the faculty or from an approved list of faculty subjects offered on campuses other than Clayton.

Students must have their program of study approved by the course coordinator or the course coordinator's nominee prior to commencement of the relevant year.
