Women's writing in the Hispanic World today

6 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: SPN2130 or permission from the course coordinator

Synopsis: This subject studies the contribution made by women writers to contemporary Hispanic culture. Centred on 4 key literary figures-Isabel Allende (Chile), Gioconda Belli (Nicaragua), Claribel Alegría (El salvador), and Adelaide García Morales (Spain) - the subject sets the prescribed reading materials in their historical and cultural context; surveys the changing roles of women in contemporary society, their quest for identity, and the causes and consequences of their increasing political and social activism; and seeks the sources of the literary techniques used to emphasise these concerns in surrealism, feminism, ideological and psychoanalytic theories.

Assessment: Research project and oral presentation (1500 words): 35% + Short tests (30 minutes each): 20% + Final essay (2000 words): 45%
