SPN2130Culture and Civilisation of the Hispanic World(ART)
J Paredes (Sem 1)S King (Sem 2) 6 points + 3 hours per week + First or second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: SPN2010 or SPN1080 Synopsis: This subject studies the history, society and culture of the Iberian Peninsula from 200AD to the present day, and Latin America from 1492 onwards. The approach to be used is interdisciplinary in nature, allowing lectures to survey major social, political and cultural developments of the main historical periods. The main goals of the subject are two: first, to study the different situations that allowed Spain to emerge as the first world empire in the sixteenth century. Second, to present a coherent and balanced account of the Hispanic World today: its composition, its cultures and its literature. Assessment: 2 tests (equivalent to 1000 words each): 44% + Presentation (equivalent to 1000 words): 22% + Essay (1500 words): 34% |
