6 points + Peninsula + 4 hours per week + first semester + Prerequistites: CPE1003, CPE2005 plus a further 6 points of second year Network Computing study

Synopsis: The subject combines relational databases and web page design. Databases in commercial web-based applications. Architectural scenarios for accessing databases through web interfaces: gateway/database scenario, applet/database scenario, applet/CORBA scenario and the orblet scenario. Architectures used for Web based database applications. Database language binding: Open Database Connectivity (OBDC), Java Database Connectivity (JBDC). Scripting for accessing server-side databases. Data entry through web documents. Dynamic web documents from database outputs. Database transactions through web page interfaces: maintaining database state. Strategies for data integrity. Data security, privacy.

Assessment: Project 40% + Examination (3 hours) 60%
