6 points + 4 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: Basic literacy in Chinese. CHI1470 or equivalent + Prohibitions: Speakers of Mandarin and CHI2480 or CHI3480

Synopsis: This subject is available to students who cannot speak putonghua but who are fluent speakers of Cantonese and literate in Chinese. The main object of this subject is to help students acquire fluency in spoken putonghua and familiarize with the simplified Chinese character. The subject will introduce the Chinese phonetic system and phonology. Pinyin romanisation and the simplified character will be used.

Assessment: Class participation and homework: 15% + Class oral presentation: 10% + Class written test (2 hours): 15% + Examination (2 hours): 40% + Oral examination: 20%
