Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound


General information

This course is offered by the Department of Radiography and Medical Imaging as a distance education course through Monash's Centre for Learning and Teaching Support of. The course involves one compulsory attendance of up to five days at the Clayton campus of Monash University. This occurs in the first semester of study and is required to facilitate completion of a range of laboratory practical exercises in ultrasonic physics, sonographic instrumentation and digital image processing. Access will be provided at this time for students requiring practical pre-clinical skill development using the ultrasound simulator known as the Ultrasim.
Applicants will generally be graduates of a degree program in radiography and medical imaging or equivalent who have a minimum of 12 months postgraduate experience and have attained their Statement of Accreditation of the Australian Institute of Radiography or equivalent. The Department of Radiography and Medical Imaging will individually assess those applicants holding other radiography qualifications for admission.
Applicants holding degrees in other related areas (such as medicine, nursing, biomedical sciences, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine or other health sciences) will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Department of Radiography and Medical Imaging for admission.
Prior to admission to the sonographic imaging subjects, applicants must provide evidence verifying that they are actively engaged in clinical ultrasound for the equivalent of three days a week. The university does not accept any responsibility for finding clinical placements and examination variety. Suitably qualified international students wishing to undertake the diploma in their country of residence must also satisfy the Department of Radiography and Medical Imaging in respect to the appropriateness of their clinical supervision.

Course structure

This course consists of eight subjects which are completed over a minimum of two years part-time study (4 x 18-week semesters). From 2002, the course will be offered full-time over one year (4 x 24-week semesters).
