Graduate Certificate in Women's Health
This
course is offered, through distance education mode, by the Department of
General Practice. The objectives of the degree are:
- to understand and manage the normal female and male reproductive
physiology, and the normal physiology changes that occur at menopause
- to manage the effects that hormonal changes have on the physical,
social, and psychological well-being of women throughout their reproductive and
climacteric years
- to demonstrate the importance of identifying risk factors for ill
health that can be modified by changes in health-related behaviour
- to examine the importance of preventive health care in relationship
to cancers, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and musculoskeletal
disorders
- to have the knowledge to advise women on the appropriate use of
contraceptive methods and hormone replacement therapy
- to manage the emotional and mental health of women, explore their
roles as carers and the health effects of sex stereotyping on women
- to manage and advise on the special needs of aboriginal, migrant,
lesbian and disabled women in our society
- to demonstrate an ability to diagnose and manage, in the primary
health setting, disorders of reproductive and climacteric health, and the
health issues of ageing women.
The course will be conducted part-time
over a period of 12 months. It is made available to registered general
practitioners engaged in part or full-time medical practice. Recognition of
prior learning is also available.
The
course consists of three compulsory core subjects:
- CWH1002 Women's health in society
- CWH1001 Family planning: sexual and reproductive health
- DFM3001 Menopause
Assessment
is by coursework participation, assignments with occasional special projects
and clinical audits.
