The Graduate Diploma of Education (Special Education) focuses on exceptional children and provides theoretical, experimental and clinical studies in relevant areas of special education. Graduates of this program may apply to undertake further studies leading to a higher degree.
The major objectives of the course are to provide students with the competencies to:

• develop awareness of the issues relevant to the development and education of children and adolescents with special needs
• acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the assessment, diagnosis, program planning and implementation for students with special needs
• develop understanding of the local human services systems relevant to special education
• acquire familiarity with the professional and ethical issues which are relevant to special education.

Admission requirements

Applicants should have either teaching qualifications or appropriate professional qualifications equivalent to a three-year undergraduate degree plus at least one year's experience. Personal interviews or reports may be requested in some cases.

Course outline

The course consists of six compulsory subjects. Four compulsory subjects provide a broadly based interdisciplinary introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of special education. The fifth and sixth subjects comprise a special education practicum which forms a major component of the course and is undertaken in special schools and centres, regular schools, institutions and other relevant settings.

• EDF4012 Introduction to special needs students (six points)
• EDF4247 International perspectives in special education (six points)
• EDF6602 Special education practice 1 (12 points)
• EDF6614 Special education practice 2 (12 points)

Elective subjects

Students must complete a further 12 credit points as follows:

• EDF6605 Studies in learning difficulties or
• two six-credit point units approved by the Special Education course coordinator or
• another 12-credit-point unit approved by the Special Education course coordinator, as appropriate for a particular student's individual needs.

Length of course/workload required

This course comprises one year of full-time study taken on-campus. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48.
