Synopsis: A study of the main works of narrative produced in Latin America since 1955. Basic principles of literary theory affecting Latin American writers (ie magical realism, mythology and cultural studies). Special emphasis will be placed on the study of Gabriel García Márquez and his Cien años de soledad, the best examples of the world-class achievements of Latin American literature in the last thirty years.
Assessment: Two take-home exams (20% each): 40% + Reading controls 20% + Final essay (2500 words) 40%
